And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.
And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it.
Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.
2nd Kings 7:3-9
God is always raising up people in dire situations. And the people He raises up are not always the ones people would expect. In the Bible He used the old and the young, male and female, and little children. According to scripture He gave voice to a donkey and Jesus said even the rocks would shout out His praise if people would not.
In this passage of scripture God chose to use four lepers.
What exactly is leprosy? It’s a flesh eating disease. It eats away until parts of the body fall off. It’s a social disease. In other words it’s contagious. People who were struck with this disease were put in isolation.
Are you isolated? Alone? Maybe you are discouraged and losing the battle with your flesh. Maybe things you need are falling off. Your prayer life, your time reading the Bible, your joy….are these things falling off?
Leprosy also attacks the eyes until a leper goes blind. Are you losing your vision? Whatever you are going through don’t let that circumstance steal your vision.
Leper’s also needed food. Due to their isolation food was not easily accessible. If a leper needed food they had to announce themselves as they entered a town. This way people knew they were coming and they could keep their distance.
Maybe you feel distanced from people. Maybe you were considered the black sheep, a trouble maker, or a thief. Maybe people wrote you off. Maybe a church wrote you off. Can I tell you Jesus hasn’t written you off. All you have to do is come to Him.
In 2 Kings we are introduced to four leperous men who had a decision to make. They could do nothing and die or take their chances with the Syrians. They chose to not be bound by fear or depression. They made an act of desperation. When people are desperate they will do whatever it takes.
Are you willing to do whatever it takes? It’s time for spiritual preservation. Jesus is the Cure for whatever you are dealing with and He loves us enough to allow the troubles of life so we will turn to Him.
Maybe you are unable to go to church but no one can stop you from being the church. Trials test the body of Christ. They cause us to work out our salvation. Can you seek God when you have no one and it’s just you and Him? Fire yourself up, get in the Word, spend time with God.
When the plague came to Egypt God’s people were told to stay in their houses. They were instructed to cover the mantle of the door with the blood of a lamb. Your house is covered with the blood of the Lamb of your God. Believe God. Whatever it is you are suffering God will bring you through.
This passage tells us the lepers entered the camp and found food, silver, and gold. When your trial is over you also will be blessed. But don’t hide it. Share all God has blessed you with. Share the Good News of Jesus, pray and minister to the hurting. He does not bless us so we can hoard it and never bless others.
Again the question is…
Shall we just sit here and die?
No we shall not!
PRAY THIS
Father help me through this season of my life. I will not give in to fear, or doubt, or depression. Help me to get closer to you than ever and to trust in you. Help me to not be self absorbed but to reach out to others. Help me, no matter what I endure, to shine my light. Amen
