Disciple Making Church in Kansas City || Sex Sins

< Back to Blog

We are a disciple making church in Kansas City because we believe in the POWER of making disciples. If Jesus did it, we know it must be our priority as well. In being a disciple making church, we do our best to build relationships that cause long lasting impressions. With that we can help answer questions that may be hard to talk about in any other setting.

There is no easy way to bring up the subject of sex sins. So I am going to just jump right in with this passage of scripture.

1 Cor 5:1-5 I have heard terrible things about some of you. In fact, you are behaving worse than the Gentiles. A man is even sleeping with his own stepmother. You are proud, when you ought to feel bad enough to chase away anyone who acts like that.I am with you only in my thoughts. But in the name of our Lord Jesus I have already judged this man, as though I were with you in person. So when you meet together and the power of the Lord Jesus is with you, I will be there too. You must then hand that man over to Satan. His body will be destroyed, but his spirit will be saved when the Lord Jesus returns.

We actually read that a man is having sex with his stepmom. Not only is this in the Bible times but this sin was in the church body and Paul said even unbelievers didn’t behave as badly. Today this is still a subject that preachers need to confront. Paul continues in chapter 6.

1 Cor 6:9-10 NLT Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.

Here the first 5 sins Paul mentions are all sexual in nature. And the last one he mentions is homosexuality. We have made homosexuality a sin greater than others but here we see fornication and adultery are mentioned first. We also see that anyone bound by sexual sin will not enter God’s kingdom. Sexual sins are devastating.

1 Cor 6: 12-14 You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.13 You say, “Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.” (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies. 14 And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead.

There are those today who say who say God made my body and its passions so He understands how I feel. However the body is not for sexual immorality including fornication or maturbation. The body and the Lord are one. A good way to test this is just ask yourself if you would do these things if you knew Jesus was present? Will this help me and the other person to grow spiritually.

Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.” But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.
Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Cor 6:15-20

We all know the body is the temple of God and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. When we sin God is present. Don’t drag the Holy Spirit into your sin.
Culture has changed and we don’t understand how culture has affected us as Christians. Paul asks, “Is it right to join with a prostitute?”. Paul was not talking about picking up a woman for hire. But this is referring to the temple prostitutes in Corinth. Sexual sin was rampant and the church in Corinth was affected by this.
I mentioned idolatry as a sexual sin. You may have questioned that when you first read it. But in Corinth the temples had statutes made in the form of reproductive organs. Men would come into these temples and masturbate before them and this was considered an offering. They were giving sexual offerings to reproductive idols. Idolatry!
Even as children sexual sins devastate. The first thing a child feels when “experimenting” with masturbation is a deep seated feeling of guilt and shame.
David sinned with Bathsheba and was so shamed by his sin he committed murder to cover it up.
Years ago pornography was not as easily accessible. When it was found it was usually under beds, hidden in garages, buried in a box.Today the world wide web is accessible to adults and kids alike with the click of a button. If you are a parent I strongly urge you to rethink allowing your children to have cell phones or to use the internet unattended.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a television or the internet in your home. But I am saying for your sake and your children you have to work out your family’s salvation. When adults are finding themselves struggling with poen online how much more should we safeguard our children.

This is what sexual sin does to us:
Destroys futures.
Disinherits us from kingdom power.
Exploits us emotionally.
Brings us to a point of incompletion.
Poisons marriages.
Exposes us to the potential of an unwanted child.
Spreads disease.
Leads to unnatural behavior.

Whether you are bound in sexual sin or you just want to guard your heart pray this with me.

Father Your Word says to be holy as you are holy. Without holiness no one can see You. I ask you to forgive me for any ungodly thoughts. Forgive me for letting my eyes wander. Forgive me for not being accountable and allowing others to help me. Help me Lord and let Your convictions fill my heart. Holy Spirit I am asking that you help me, speak to me, and lead me. I want to do Your will Lord. Grant me strength and set me free from lust and evil desires. In Jesus name, Amen.
